Great Smoky Mountains National Park, encompassing some of the oldest mountains on earth, is located in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. The state boundary line bisects the park, which is one of the largest in the eastern United States.
Explore the diverse flora and fauna and learn about the park’s traditional culture in the 2,114.19-hectare World Heritage Site, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Take a trip back in time by visiting one of 97 buildings preserved in five historic districts. In Cataloochee, for example, admire 19th- and 20th-century wooden buildings, including churches, schools, and homes, and learn about the 1,200 people who lived in the valley in 1910. Additional historic buildings are located in Cades Cove, Oconaluftee, and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail area. Visit Kuwohi, the park’s highest peak at 2,025 meters. This peak was formerly known as Clingmans Dome, and you can climb to the observation deck for spectacular views.

Enjoy fun and adventure all year round at Great Basin National Park, home to the 311.61km long Snake Range. There are plenty of activities to choose from. In the summer, fish in streams or take a scenic drive along remote park roads. Take on a challenging hike or explore underground caves. In the fall, the mountains are awash with colorful foliage, while in the winter, the forests are covered in pure white. Ski the park and learn how to spot tracks left by bobcats, elk, coyotes, and jackrabbits. In the spring, animals wake up from hibernation and colorful plants begin to bloom.
Great Basin National Park is home to a wealth of natural treasures, including the majestic 13,000-foot Wheeler Peak and the world’s oldest forests, some of which are as old as 5,000 years, known as bristlecone pines. Surrounded by such natural wonders, trails like Mountain View Nature are a must-see. The park’s Lehman Caves are a world away, hiding awe-inspiring beauty beneath the ground. The slender stalactites that hang down from the cave ceiling create amazing scenes here and there. The park’s spectacular scenery doesn’t end even after the sun sets. When it gets dark, be sure to count the twinkling stars that decorate the night sky.
