Great Smoky Mountains National Park, encompassing some of the oldest mountains on earth, is located in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. The state boundary line bisects the park, which is one of the largest in the eastern United States.
Explore the diverse flora and fauna and learn about the park’s traditional culture in the 2,114.19-hectare World Heritage Site, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Take a trip back in time by visiting one of 97 buildings preserved in five historic districts. In Cataloochee, for example, admire 19th- and 20th-century wooden buildings, including churches, schools, and homes, and learn about the 1,200 people who lived in the valley in 1910. Additional historic buildings are located in Cades Cove, Oconaluftee, and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail area. Visit Kuwohi, the park’s highest peak at 2,025 meters. This peak was formerly known as Clingmans Dome, and you can climb to the observation deck for spectacular views.
