Suncheon Bay is located in the central-western part of South Korea's southern coast, surrounded by Suncheon City, Gwangju Integrated Special City, Goheung County, and Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do. The large bay surrounded by the long Goheung and Yeosu peninsulas is sometimes called Suncheon Bay, while the northern sea bay surrounded by Inan-dong, Daedae-dong, Haeryong-myeon, and Sangnae-ri in Suncheon City is also called Suncheon Bay. Even if we only consider the seawater area of Suncheon Bay within administrative boundaries, it is an extremely large area of over 75㎢. The area of the tidal flats revealed at low tide alone reaches 12㎢, with the total tidal flat area reaching 22.6㎢. Additionally, from the confluence of Dongcheon and Isacheon streams in Suncheon to the front of the tidal flats in Suncheon Bay, a massive reed colony stretches across a total area of 5.4㎢.

This open film set is located in Jorye-dong, Suncheon. It consists of three villages each representing a different era from the 1950s to the 1970s.
A great place to revisit the past, as I mentioned earlier, is the Suncheon Open Film Location. Located in the neighborhood of Jorye-dong, the set was created for movies and dramas in 2006 and is now a popular attraction.
The village is split between three eras: 1950’s Suncheon, 1960’s Seoul Bongcheong-dong village, and 1970’s Seoul suburb.
The whole course probably takes an hour or two of meandering, and it’s fun to see my generation running around taking photos in costume. It has to be a little surreal for the older generation who actually lived these sets to see their kids and grandkids reliving their own past! I think my favorite was seeing all the halmonis and harabeogis dancing to some golden Korean oldies in the set’s discotheque.
