Since the end of July 2006, the City of Bordeaux has been equipped with the largest water mirror in the world (3,450 m2). Located opposite the Place de la Bourse, between the Quai de la Douane and the Quai Louis XVIII, the water mirror alternates between mirror and fog effects. A fairytale created by the fountain builder Jean-Max Llorca, the water mirror is the central element of the quays of Bordeaux redesigned by the landscape architect Michel Corajoud. Other cities around the world, such as Quebec City, are studying the construction of similar equipment.
The Miroir d’Eau(The water mirror) is one of the most frequented public spaces in Bordeaux, by its inhabitants and many tourists. Almost a victim of its own success, this "Bordeaux monument" faces many incivilities and irresponsible behaviour on a daily basis. Very frequent, festive gatherings in the mirror often leave a sad spectacle. However, garbage bins are installed on both sides of the water mirror and a municipal bylaw formally prohibits the use of glass containers in this sector of the quays. Specific signage underlines this and the police fine anyone in possession of a glass bottle in this place. Despite these repeated calls, the municipality's services are still confronted every day with the all too frequent deliberate breakage of glass containers on the site of the mirror. The city of Bordeaux is trying to limit them and calls on everyone to be civic-minded.
According to the following cycle:
- 3 minutes of filling,
- 15 minutes of mirror effect,
- 5 minutes of emptying and 3 minutes of fog.
Shutdown every winter for maintenance
